Please join the Centre for Feminist Foreign Policy (CFFP) and the Campaign to Stop Killer Robots for the launch of CFFP's "Feminist Foreign Policy and Lethal Autonomous Weapons" briefing. Ahead of the next Convention on Conventional Weapons (CCW) meeting on lethal autonomous weapons (LAWs) systems on 20 - 21 August 2019, join our discussion on how a feminist foreign policy (FFP) framework is useful for understanding the threat of LAWs.
Though the international movement to preemptively prohibit LAWs is quickly growing, the UK Government has indicated it believes existing humanitarian law is sufficient in addressing this issue. However, as new technological advancements develop quickly, the lack of commitment to pursuing further regulatory measures is worrying. The danger of LAWs is clear, yet attention to and momentum for banning killer robots is lost as Brexit continues to take centre stage in political agendas. As UK political parties adopt explicitly feminist policies and explore adopting FFP in party manifestos, it is critical that politicians and policymakers understand that FFP actively calls for banning LAWs. Anything less is a co-optation of feminist values to uphold patriarchal structures.
