Germany’s Role in supporting victims and survivors of nuclear testing

This policy brief aims to support the German government – and other like-minded governments – in actively implementing and constructively strengthening the international norm of assisting victims of nuclear testing. It argues that such efforts hold the significant potential to alleviate the suffering of individuals and communities harmed by nuclear weapons. Moreover, reinforcing this norm can contribute to advancing humanitarian disarmament and, by extension, strengthening the broader multilateral arms-control architecture. Finally, by helping to bridge divisions between nuclear-armed and non-nuclear states, these efforts may also play a meaningful role in advancing progress toward a world free of nuclear weapons.
